When we are born, our bodies are very alkaline. That makes us smell fresh and sweet. As we grow older, our bodies become more acidic. Acidity is caused by various circumstances: acid-forming food,  the inability of excreting accumulating toxins, environmental toxins (insecticides, pesticides etc.). Acidity means low pH which can be classified as an excess of protons and a lack of electrons. Alkalinity means high pH or an excess of electrons and lack of protons. We know that protons and electrons make up atoms. A balanced atom has the same amount of each. When an atom gains or loses an electron, it becomes unbalanced and becomes electrically charged (positive or negative). Electrons are negatively charged & amp, protons positive.

May it suffice to say that once your atoms go out of balance…you go out of balance as well! The average person should have a blood pH of between 7.35 & 7.44. At a pH of 7.0 you will
find the same number of electrons & amp, protons. At a pH of 6.0, the relationship has changed to 10 times in the favor of the proton…….and at a pH of 5.0 your body now is 100 times out of
balance!!! An individual going out of that range will get ill. Perhaps you have met this individual who is frequently unwell with colds, fatigue and generally low vitality.

When we alkalize the body, we are introducing electrons to restore balance. This can be achieved by eating alkaline-forming foods or with supplements. We can use bicarbonate of soda as it is an electron donor (can give away electrons without becoming a free radical itself) and an electron acceptor. It is a natural balancer and is scientifically termed a buffer. Please note…. if we have too many electrons (too alkaline) which neutralize all free radicals, then the “bugs” or bacteria may eat us alive!

Free radicals are an essential part of our immune system, if we do not have this important part, we can develop diseases we wanted to prevent in the first place by taking antioxidants (electron donors) Now taking bicarbonate on its own is not a good idea! It tastes terrible and dilutes digestive juices (stomach acid) and hence should not be taken before or after food. This will cause
digestion problems. If we cannot digest our proteins well, we will not produce amino acids. If we cannot produce amino acids, we cannot chelate heavy metals. This causes a positive
ionic metal builds up until they reach toxic levels which in turn causes a million-fold increase in free radical production and inflammation!

The other problem with a bad protein metabolism is increased acidity! All chronic degenerative diseases thrive in an acidic environment. Our modern western diet & lifestyle factors are responsible for this pH imbalance & amp; increased disease. The addition of citric acid has dual purpose. One to balance the bicarb as not to dilute/neutralize stomach acid and interfere with digestion. The other to enhance the alkalizing effect of the product as citric acid leaves an alkaline ash after it has been metabolized. From the food we eat, the air we breathe, the water and the fact that most food today is very much devoid of necessary nutrients. That lack of nutrients prevents the body to function properly and to get rid of accumulating toxins.

When we look at the situation from the point of view of balance and harmony, we realize that acidity has a lot to do with the protons and alkalinity with electrons. ‘Alkaline water’ often is water where the number of electrons has been artificially increased through electrolysis. The method being recommended is a mixture of bicarbonate of soda, citric acid, magnesium carbonate and potassium bicarbonate. Roughly one teaspoon is giving us a mixture which is slightly acid. That means it does not interfere with the hydrochloric acid in our stomach which is so important for proper digestion and especially protein digestion. On the other hand, it certainly alkalizes the body. Bicarbonate of soda is natural to the body.

A healthy pancreas produces about 2 liters of bi carb a day. Bicarbonate of soda is an electron acceptor and that makes it a ‘buffer’. It prevents ‘Ph bounce’ or the rapid change in pH. pH bounce may give rise to allergies and encourages ‘opportunistic invaders’ (bacteria, viruses, yeasts etc.) to get a foothold. Citric acid also is natural to the body. It forms part of the energy production cycle which is known as the ‘Krebs cycle’ or ‘citric acid cycle’. We realized that two of the most important minerals (metals) for the health of the individual cell (and hence of the entire human body) are sodium and potassium.
