Iodine is an essential element for our bodies.

Specifically, the thyroid gland.

The thyroid produces thyroid hormones and iodine is used in the manufacture of these hormones.

If there is a lack of iodine in the system, then your thyroid functions, and this is called Hypothyroidism.  Your thyroid controls a lot of functions in your body, your metabolic rate for example can be increased or decreased depending on nutritional availability.
